Well, T-Mobile finally decided to catch up with the competition. Unfortunately, not by improving their network or expanding service offerings. T-Mobile has decided to join other carriers cashing in on SMS messages by raising prices to $.20 per message:
The new price puts T-Mobile in line with other mobile phone service providers like AT&T, Verizon and Sprint. Those companies have been charging 20 cents a message for at least a few months. - TG Daily - T-Mobile raises text messaging rates to 20 centsMany marketers are looking at SMS as the next frontier for their e-marketing initiatives. Problem is that it is expensive and targeted consumers don't react positively. Add to that a new problem - SMS is now approaching stupid expensive. At $.20 per message, somehow a 256 character message just doesn't deliver the value. Add to that with the growth of smartphones, you can email the same consumer for about $.02 per email for commercial messages. Personal messages are still free. At the end of the day, SMS is a dying message platform - but it will take a few years to die off and until then, cell carriers will wring every cent they can from their monopolies.
