Making Politics Out of Murder

You can count on power lust and greed, even in a recession. Take the bizarre and tragic episode that that took place at a Safeway grocery store, just north of Tuscon. You can’t help but notice how quickly political operatives raced to define the shooter, Jared Loughner and his motives:

On the Left
Jared Loughner was influenced by right-wing talk radio and Sarah Palin.
Boogeyman:
Talk Radio and Sarah Palin

On the Right
Jared Loughner was a left-wing pot head tangled up with strange religion.
Bogeyman:
Drugs, non-Christian religion and liberal culture.

Both sides raced at breakneck speed to spin the shootings in terms of their agendas. On the left, it was clearly talk radio’s and Sarah Palin’s fault. On the right, the trigger man was a pothead, filled with bad ideas by liberal culture and non-Christian religion. In both cases, he was the exact monster that the other side exclusively is capable of creating.

So, what’s the truth?
In this case, a nine year old girl and a federal judge and three others were murdered. Another 13 were shot, including a congresswoman is in intensive care. The person who deserves the blame and who is in custody is Jared Loughner, who apparently has many issues that transcend any political ideology. And that should be where the proverbial buck stops. Unfortunately, this story will not end until something worse comes along.
